final

August 15, 2016, 11:05 pm

All three Americans and two Jamaicans had qualified for the final. The field was completed by one starter each from the Bahamas, Italy and the Ukraine.

The American world and Olympic champion of 2012 Allyson Felix was considered the favorite . She wanted to be the first female athlete with five Olympic victories. In 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London , she had won the 4 x 100 meter relay . In London, she was also Olympic champion with the 4 x 400 meter relay and over 200 meters . Her strongest opponent was Vice World Champion Shaunae Miller from the Bahamas. The Jamaican World Cup third Shericka Jackson was also rated highly.

Felix started on lane 4, Miller on lane 7. After the start, US runner Natasha Hastings caught up with Miller, but Miller managed to get a lead on the back straight. At the start of the home straight she was three meters ahead of Hastings, followed by Felix. On the home stretch Felix caught up with Hastings and then pulled past her. She also got closer and closer to the leading Miller. Felix and Miller were almost tied shortly before the finish. Shaunae Miller secured the gold medal in front of Allyson Felix with a jump over the finish line. Shericka Jackson had meanwhile taken bronze with a strong final straight. Natasha Hastings came fourth ahead of Phyllis Francis from the USA, Stephenie Ann McPherson from Jamaica and Olha Semljak from Ukraine. The reigning European champion Libania Grenot from Italy was Olympic eight.
