final

August 5, 2012, 9:10 p.m.

In the final, three Americans faced two Jamaicans and one athlete each from Botswana, Great Britain and Russia.

The favorite was US athlete Sanya Richards-Ross, the 2009 world champion . Her strongest opponents were the reigning world champion Amantle Montsho from Botswana and the 2008 Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu from Great Britain.

In the final, Russian Antonina Kriwoschapka took the lead, followed by Richards-Ross, her two teammates DeeDee Trotter and Francena McCorory and Montsho. In the finish curve, Richards-Ross took the lead, Trotter and McCorory also overtook Kriwoschapka. On the home straight, Richards-Ross initially increased their lead and Kriwoschapka fell further back. Ohuruogu came up strong in the end, but could no longer reach Richards-Ross. The American favorite won with a one-meter lead over Ohuruogu, who in turn was able to outperform Trotter by two hundredths of a second. Montsho finished fourth, missing bronze by just three hundredths of a second. The Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills came in fifth.
