August 9, 2012, 7:20 pm
Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, two of them had reached the qualifying distance. Two US-Americans and two Italians fought for the medals together with one participant each from the Bahamas, China, France, Haiti, Cuba, Nigeria, Russia and Belarus.
The favorite was the reigning world champion , the American Christian Taylor. One of his main competitors, British vice world champion Phillips Idowu, suffered from a pinched nerve that he had contracted at a meeting in the context of the IAAF Diamond League , the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene , USA in June. Idowu still competed in London , but failed in qualifying.
In the first round the Italian European champion Fabrizio Donato took the lead with 17.38 m. In the second attempt he improved to 17.44 m, but remained in second place after Will Claye from the USA, bronze medalist in the long jump , had achieved 17.54 m. Donato improved by one centimeter in the third lap, while Taylor came to 17.15 m after two failed attempts and was now fifth behind the Italians Daniele Greco and Leevan Sands from the Bahamas.
In the fourth round, the decision about the medals was made. Donato jumped 17.48 m, Claye improved to 17.62 m. Taylor reached 17.81 m, so he conquered the top. This order lasted until the end.
