Records
The world records that existed at the time were still unofficial.
World record | 15.26 m | Ireland | Matthew Roseingreve | Gort ( Ireland ), August 15, 1895 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Olympic record | 14.47 m | United States | Meyer Prinstein | Paris finals ( FRA ), July 16, 1900 |
There are still different versions of the world record holder. The American Edward Bloss is also given with his 14.78 m from 1893. The reason for this inconsistency is probably the fact that in the early years of athletics there was no binding rule for the order of the take-off leg for the three ground contacts during the jump. The current standard, in which the first two partial jumps with the same leg and the third partial jump with the other, was not always used at that time.

Meyer Prinstein repeated his Olympic victory in Paris , which apart from him only John Flanagan in the hammer throw and Ray Ewry in the three standing jumping disciplines. But Prinstein did not quite reach the distance he jumped four years ago. He only took the lead in the last round. This made Prinstein double Olympic champion in St. Louis, because he also won the gold medal in the long jump , which took place on the same day.
The information in the sources used here agree completely with regard to the first six. Seventh-placed Samuel Jones, who became Olympic champion in the high jump , does not mention the Megede , while all other sources have him in their lists.
