qualification
Date: August 3, 1984
For the qualification, the athletes were drawn into two groups. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 16.60 m. Since only eight jumpers reached this distance, the final field was filled with the next best jumpers from both groups, the so-called lucky losers , to twelve participants. So 16.18 m was enough for the final. The directly qualified athletes are highlighted in light blue, the lucky losers in light green.

final
Date: August 4, 1984
Twelve jumpers had qualified for the final. Eight of them had made the required qualification distance, the field was filled with the next best jumpers from both groups. Three Americans and three Brits each made progress. Two Nigerians had also qualified. There was also one jumper each from the Federal Republic of Germany, China, Senegal and Egypt. Each participant initially had three attempts. The best eight athletes were then able to complete three more jumps.
From the boycott states, the absence of the Polish world champion Zdzisław Hoffmann restricted the value of this competition. The favorites included the three US athletes Mike Conley Sr., Vice World Champion Willie Banks and Al Joyner as well as the World Cup third Ajayi Agbebaku from Nigeria.
In the final, Joyner took the lead in the first attempt with 17.26 m. Behind him, Conley placed 35 centimeters behind the Chinese Zou Zhenxian. In the second round, the Briton Keith Connor moved up to third place, in lap three Conley came within eight centimeters of Joyner.
There was a special feature in the final of the eight best athletes after the third attempt. Seventh-placed Agbebaku sustained an injury in his second jump and had to abandon the competition. He stayed in seventh place in the standings, while the British Eric McCalla took his place in the finals as the current ninth. In the further course nothing changed in the first seven places in the ranking. Only McCalla could improve and move up from ninth to eighth place.
Only two athletes exceeded the 17-meter mark. Six jumpers succeeded in doing this at the previous World Championships. Since 1968 all Olympic champions had jumped further than the gold medalist here in Los Angeles .
