The lack of athletes from the boycott states had little impact in this discipline. All top favorites were there, changes could have been made. U. given in the stands behind the medal places.
Three Americans, two British, two Canadians and a Jamaican had qualified for the final. With Carl Lewis , the USA were the favorites. Lewis had set out to win four gold medals - 100 m , 200 m , long jump and 4 × 100 m relay - in Los Angeles, imitating his role model Jesse Owens , who had achieved this at the 1936 Berlin Olympics .
The fastest start in the final, however, got Sam Graddy , who was in the lead up to the 50-meter mark. Only after increasing the speed was Lewis able to overtake his teammate, who was still able to fend off the attack by Canadian Ben Johnson. Lewis won by two tenths of a second, the largest lead in an Olympic final since 1908. The silver medal went to Graddy. Johnson won bronze in front of the third US runner Ron Brown , who prevented a triple success for the hosts.
Carl Lewis ran for the USA's 13th Olympic victory in this discipline. At the same time, it was the ninth double victory of US athletes in this discipline.
