Three Americans, two Jamaicans, two Canadians and one British had qualified for the final. With Evelyn Ashford , the USA was the favorite. Due to the GDR's Olympic boycott, Ashford's arch rival Marlies Göhr could not compete. So the duel between world record holder Ashford and world champion Göhr was eliminated . Candidates for the other medals were the Jamaican Merlene Ottey-Page and the other two Americans Alice Brown and Jeanette Bolden.

Jeanette Bolden and Alice Brown got the quickest start in the final, but Ashford quickly made up ground and took the lead. Halfway through the race, Ashford was leading Brown. So it went to the finish and Evelyn Ashford achieved a new Olympic record despite headwinds . She was the first ever female runner to break the 11-second mark at the Olympic Games. Behind Alice Brown, the Jamaican Merlene Ottey-Page prevented a total success of the hosts, for Jeanette Bolden the fourth place remained ahead of Ottey-Page's compatriot Grace Jackson.

Merlene Ottey-Page won the first Jamaican medal in the 100 meters for women.
