The favorite was the US runner Edith McGuire, who had won the US eliminations. Wyomia Tuys, also USA, was given a medal chance, but McGuire was clearly rated higher. That changed in the quarterfinals, however, when Tuys equalized Wilma Rudolph's world record and at the same time set a new Olympic record .

In the final, an overwhelming US team with three runners met two Polish women, one British woman and one Australian woman. Edith McGuire, who was favored before these games, had to be satisfied with silver, clearly beaten. The impressive Wyomia Tyus won the first Olympic victory of her career. A headwind - 1.25 meters per second - was responsible for the fact that there were no better times. Ewa Kłobukowska from Poland prevented a triple success of the USA with her bronze medal.
