Conducting the competition

The athletes entered a qualifying round on October 15, in which each jumper had three attempts. The qualifying distance with which the athletes directly reached the final in the afternoon of the same day was 55.00 meters. Since fewer than twelve starters achieve this standard, the starting field was filled with the next best throwers up to twelve participants. In the final, each participant initially had three attempts. The six best athletes were then allowed three more attempts.

In addition to the Olympic champion from 1960 , Al Oerter from the USA, and his compatriot Jay Silvester, the favorites also included the Czechoslovak world record holder Ludvík Daněk. Oerter had suffered a spinal disc injury in 1964, and he had sustained damage to the costal cartilage while training in Tokyo in the rain-soaked throwing ring. As a result, he was very limited and could only throw painfully and with pain relievers.

In the qualification, Oerter had set a new Olympic record, but in the final Daněk first took the lead. Oerter was second ahead of the Pole Zenon Greier. In the second attempt Oerters compatriot Dave Weill stepped into the limelight, which improved Daněk's lead. He was now in front of the Czechoslovak, Oerter and Greier. In the third round, New Year's Eve moved up to fourth position ahead of Greier and the Hungarian József Szécsényi.

On lap four Daněk went back to the front. Weill was second before Oerter and New Year's Eve. Greier had lost fifth place to Szécsényi. In the fifth attempt there was the second total Olympic record in discus throwing at these games. Oerter threw the disc to exactly 61 meters, replacing Daněk at the top. Weill slipped into third place. In the last run there was no change in the ranking. Thus Al Oerter celebrated his third Olympic victory in a row.

Ludvík Daněk won the first Czechoslovak medal in the discus throw.
