After the season so far and the eliminations here in Tokyo , US runner Paul Drayton was the favorite. In the semifinals, he had set the existing Olympic record . The main competitor was seen as Henry Carr, who had hitherto been deeply stacked. The 1960 Olympic champion , Livio Berruti, was no longer in the shape of four years ago, but still reached the final here and came in fifth.
The race turned out to be more exciting than expected for the first hundred meters. Drayton and Carr came out of the corner tied. On the home stretch, Carr surprisingly had the most reserves and won well ahead of Drayton and Edwin Roberts from Trinidad and Tobago. The 100-meter Olympic third party Harry Jerome took fourth place here. Despite the headwind, Henry Carr improved the Olympic record by two tenths of a second.
Edwin Roberts won the first athletics medal for Trinidad and Tobago.
