The favorite for this race was Vice World Champion Usain Bolt from Jamaica after his terrific victory over the short sprint route . He had almost played over 200 meters with his opponents in the preliminary and intermediate runs - at least that's how it worked. Churandy Martina from the Netherlands Antilles emerged as the strongest opponent after his strong semi-final run, who had finished fourth over 100 meters . The two Americans Wallace Spearmon, third in the 2007 World Cup and vice world champion in 2005 , as well as Shawn Crawford, Olympic champion in 2004 and third fastest in the semi-finals here in Beijing , were also rated highly .

The final was contested by three Americans and one runner each from Jamaica, Great Britain, the Netherlands Antilles, Zimbabwe and St. Kitts and Nevis.

Usain Bolt came out of the starting curve with a large lead on the home straight. This time he stopped playing provocative games before crossing the finish line and ran the race to the end. For this he was rewarded by undercutting the existing world record by two hundredths of a second. More than half a second after him, Martina crossed the finish line in 19.82 s ahead of Spearmon in 19.95 s. However, Spearmon was disqualified for leaving his track. The US team protested - unsuccessfully, because the evidence of the rule violation was provided. However, it was also recognized that Martina had also left his path. Martina was also disqualified. The silver medal now went to Shawn Crawford, who had been in second place for a long time and was ousted on the home straight by the now disqualified Martina and Spearmon. Like Spearmon's compatriot Walter Dix, who won the bronze medal over 100 meters. The NOC of the Netherlands Antilles lodged a protest, which was dismissed on March 6, 2009 by the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) . Brian Dzingai from Zimbabwe took fourth place ahead of Christian Malcolm from the UK.

Usain Bolt won with a lead of 66 hundredths of a second over the silver medalist. It was the largest lead ever achieved in an Olympic final over 200 meters .
