August 23, 2008 , 7:30 p.m.

There was no clear favorite for this race, an exciting competition was expected. With good prospects the incumbent were world champion Alfred Kirwa Yego from Kenya and his compatriot Wilfred Bungei, WM -Vierter 2005 and WM -Fünfter from 2007 into the race. Surprisingly, the Russian Yuri Borsakowski, who has been convincing in recent years, Olympic champion in 2004 , vice world champion in 2005 and third in the 2007 World Cup , did not reach the final. The Canadian vice world champion from 2007 Gary Reed was also rated highly.

In the final, two Algerians and two Kenyans as well as one runner each from Bahrain, Canada, Cuba and Sudan faced each other.

Right from the start, Bungei took the lead in this race without setting a high pace. The first four hundred meters were covered in 53.53 seconds with Bungei on top. The field stayed close together. The Sudanese Ismail Ahmed Ismail and Yego followed in the next places. Even on the back straight of the final lap, there was hardly any change in the ranking. Cuban Yeimer López only attacked decisively in the finish curve and took third place behind Bungei and Ismail, who were still in the lead. But in the final sprint López had nothing more to add and fell back again. Bungei and Ismail, on the other hand, could not be taken away from their top positions. Wilfred Bungei was Olympic champion ahead of Ismail Ahmed Ismail. The Bahraini Yusuf Saad Kamel was still in third place up to thirty meters from the finish line. But in the last few meters, Alfred Kirwa Yego released the last of his strength and won the bronze medal. From the very back, Gary Reed also overtook Yusuf Saad Kamel with a strong finish, the two finishing fourth and fifth. Yeimer López went sixth.

All three medals went to runners from Africa.
Ismail Ahmed Ismail won the first ever Olympic medal for Sudan with his silver medal.
