Nicholas "Nick" Symmonds (born December 30, 1983 in Sun Valley , Idaho ) is a former American middle-distance runner who specializes in the 800 and 1500 meter races. He is a seven-time NCAA champion and has twice competed in the Olympic Games: he reached the semi-finals at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games , and came fifth with a personal best at the 2012 London Summer Games . In 2013 he won the silver medal in the 800-meter run at the 2013 World Athletics Championships . At the 2015 World Championships in Athletics , he did not take part in spite of the victory at the US Trials, because he refused to sign the agreement athlete of the American Association, which provides wearing the clothes of an outfitter who is sponsoring the association.

Political

After receiving his silver medal in Moscow in 2013, Symmonds spoke to the Russian news agency R-Sport critical of the controversial legislation of the Putin government , which criminalizes “homosexual propaganda” . He was the first on-site athlete to openly position himself:

"Regardless of whether you are gay, straight, black or white: we all deserve the same rights"

Symmonds can also be quoted as saying: “If there is any way to stand up for equal rights, I will do that, regardless of whether I go to jail for it. I respect this country, but I don't agree with its rules. "

In 2012, after an auction of this advertising space, Symmonds had a temporary tattoo on their upper arm for US $ 11,000 to protest against the limited opportunities for self-marketing for athletes and the resulting financial security. The Streisand effect generated increased attention when the organizers of the Olympic Games had the advertising masked off.
