Sun Valley is a vacation resort in Blaine County , the central part of the US state Idaho , bordering the city of Ketchum . The tourist offer includes skiing, hiking, horse riding , golfing, playing tennis or cycling.

Very few of the local residents are there around the year, most come from large cities like Seattle , Los Angeles , San Francisco and some from further afield like Chicago and New York City . The community is 1804 m above sea level, the nearest airport is Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey 15 miles south. Sun Valley is near the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, a natural recreation area in the United States.
Among skiers, the name Sun Valley refers to Bald Mountain ("Baldy"), the actual ski mountain, and Dollar Mountain. Bald Mountain is 2789 m high and thus 1036 m higher than the valley. Due to the great variety of piste difficulties on the mountain, this is a very special destination among many skiers.
The name Sun Valley stands for the whole area. This includes the city of Ketchum and the neighboring small communities including Sun Valley. The region is also home to many faces known in the media who can be found there temporarily, among others. a. Bruce Willis , Ashton Kutcher , Clint Eastwood , Demi Moore , Tom Hanks , Richard S. The successful Winter Games of 1932 in Lake Placid, New York, resulted in increasing interest in winter ski resorts in America. W. Averell Harriman , the chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad , therefore saw the development of winter ski resorts in the United States based on the model of the Swiss ski resorts of St. Moritz or Davos as promising.
During the winter of 1935 to 1936, Harriman hired Felix Schaffgotsch so that he could locate possible winter sports locations in the catchment area of the Union Pacific Railroad. Schaffgotsch traveled through the areas of Yosemite Park , the San Bernardino Mountains , Rocky Mountain National Park and Jackson Hole . Near the end of the trip, he got to Idaho . An employee of the railway company said that clearing the snow from the rails to Ketchum cost the company more money than any other section of similar length. Schaffgotsch was impressed by Bald Mountain and the surrounding mountains. The mountains were high enough, had enough snow and plenty of sunshine for that. Harriman visited the site a few weeks later and agreed to a resort being built . An area of 15.73 km² was purchased for $ 4 an acre, construction of the ski resort began in the spring and was completed in 7 months for $ 1.5 million. Steve Hannigan, who had successfully advertised Miami Beach , was hired as a marketing expert and called the resort " Sun Valley ".
The ski area was opened by Harriman in December 1936. In the same winter, the Harriman Cup took place in Sun Valley for the first time , which until 1965 was one of the most important ski races in the USA. The “Challenger Inn” (today: Sun Valley Inn), built in Swiss style in 1937, and the community were also part of the resort. The restaurant opened in 1937, and at Hannigan's request, visually matching swimming pools were built in this and other buildings in the hope that these could be yet another, often photographed and published attraction in Sun Valley.
During the Second World War, the resort was closed and converted into a hospital for the US Navy. The resort was reopened in December 1946. After the war there were no buildings for a clinic until 1961 when the Sun Valley Community Hospital opened. The system, which was later named after Dr. John Moritz, was closed after the new St. Lukes Branch Hospital opened in the south of Ketchum.
With the decline in rail passenger transport at Union Pacific, Sun Valley lost its importance as a marketing object for the railway company. As the resort has always been a grant property, it was eventually sold in the 1960s.
geography
A narrow mountain range divides the Sun Valley community in two. In the middle of the northern part is the well-known " Sun Valley Inn " surrounded by many shops and residential buildings. There is also an 18-hole golf course (since 2008 a 27-hole golf course), which has spread to Trail Creek. The southern part (called Elkhorn) also has shops, hotels and residential complexes, this area was built up in the 1960 / 70s. Adjacent to Sun Valley is Ketchum, which is only a mile from the town center. Ketchum is right on Bald Mountain.
Culture
In 1971 Glen opened the Sun Valley Center for Arts and Humanities to Bill Jones. The site was on Dollar Road in Sun Valley, now it is in Ketchum and is often called the " Sun Valley Art Center ". Every year seminars, lectures and exhibitions by internationally recognized artists take place there.
