James Peter "Pete" Patterson (born January 4, 1957 in Sun Valley , Idaho ) is a retired American alpine ski racer .

Patterson first competed in the Alpine Ski World Cup in January 1976 and took fifth place in the combination in Kitzbühel, Austria . At the following Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck , Austria, he finished eleventh in the downhill race. His greatest sporting success was winning the bronze medal at the 1978 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria in combination. In the giant slalom he was able to achieve eighth place. Between 1978 and 1981 he reached four more top 10 placements in the World Cup. He finished the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , USA with a fifth place in downhill skiing.

After the end of his sporting career, Patterson returned to his native Idaho. There he worked as a mountain guide . With his wife he founded a travel company for heliskiing and trekking in Nepal .

His sister Susan Patterson was also an alpine skier.
