Rogelio Ricardo Livieres Plano

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rogelio Ricardo Livieres Plano (born August 30, 1945 in Corrientes , † August 14, 2015 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine clergyman and bishop of Ciudad del Este in Paraguay.

Life

Rogelio Ricardo Livieres Plano joined Opus Dei and was ordained a priest on August 15, 1978 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Ciudad del Este on July 12, 2004. The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Asunción , Eustaquio Pastor Cuquejo Verga CSsR , on October 3rd of the same year; Co- consecrators were Ignacio Gogorza Izaguirre SCI di Béth , Bishop of Encarnación , and Catalino Claudio Giménez Medina , Bishop of Caacupé .

Controversy over Carlos Urrutigoity

As Vicar General of his diocese, Livieres Plano appointed Father Carlos Urrutigoity , who was accused of sexual abuse in the United States; no indictment was brought because the Diocese of Scranton committed to pay $ 450,000 in damages, of which $ 300,000 was payable by Urrutigoity to an abuse victim. Livieres Plano had defended Urrutigoity against the abuse allegations and publicly called Archbishop Cuquejo Verga of Asuncion, who was launching an investigation into the matter, homosexual .

As a result, Pope Francis ordered an apostolic visitation by Cardinal Curia Santos Abril y Castelló in July 2014 . The ordinations scheduled by Livieres Plano were suspended by Abril. Bishop Livieres said that “bishops slandered him before the nuncio”. The Urrutigoity case is only a "pretext". Urrutigoity was released from his position as Vicar General in the summer of 2014 by Bishop Livieres.

On September 25, 2014 Pope Francis decreed the impeachment of Liviere as bishop of Ciudad del Este without giving a reason . The Vatican announcement of emeritus status stated that the "serious decision (...) is guided by the greater good of the unity of the Church of Ciudad del Este and the episcopal community of Paraguay". Bishop Livieres had been called to Rome while his retirement was announced and the locks at the episcopal residence in Ciudad del Este were being exchanged. Despite several requests to be received by Pope Francis in order to find out what he was being accused of and to be able to defend himself if necessary, the Pope refused an audience. In a statement, Bishop Livieres spoke of an “intrigue of other bishops”.

After his retirement, Bishop Livieres worked as a journalist, especially as an author for the Spanish-language news site Adelante la Fe . Livieres Plano died on August 14, 2015 in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
