Eustaquio Pastor Cuquejo Verga CSsR (born September 20, 1939 in San Estanislao , Paraguay ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Asunción .

Life

Eustaquio Pastor Cuquejo Verga joined the order of the Redemptorists ("Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer") in 1957 . From 1959 to 1964 he studied theology and philosophy at the Redemptorist Seminary in Esopus , New York . There he was ordained a priest on June 21, 1964 . He then studied pastoral psychology in Annapolis , Maryland . After a brief activity as vicar in Paraguay, he became professor and prefect at the Redemptorist seminary in Ponta Grossa , Brazil, on July 21, 1968, and from 1973 professor of moral theology at the Studium Theologicum de Curitiba . From 1975 to 1977 he completed postgraduate studies in moral theology at the Academia Alfonsiana in Rome , part of the Pontifical Lateran University .

On January 6, 1978 he was elected Superior of the Redemptorists in Paraguay; In 1981 he was re-elected. From 1978 to 1982 he was also vice-president of the “Confederación de Religiosos del Paraguay” and from 1981 president of the “Conferencia de Puebla”.

In 1982 he was appointed titular bishop of Budua by John Paul II and appointed auxiliary bishop in Asunción. He was ordained bishop in the “Catedral Metropolitana” on August 15, 1982, by the Archbishop of Asunción Ismael Rolón SDB ; Co- consecrators were the then auxiliary bishop in Asunción Jorge Adolfo Carlos Livieres Banks and Aloísio Ariovaldo (Tarcísio) Amaral CSsR, then bishop of Limeira, Sao Paulo.

In 1983 he was elected to the Permanent Council of the Paraguayan Bishops' Conference, was chairman of the Economic Committee of the CEP from 1984 and in 1986 became a member of the "Congregación para los Religiosos y los Institutos Seculares". 1986/1987 he was chairman in the CEP for the implementation of the second National Eucharistic Congress and the visit of John Paul II in Paraguay. In 1987 he became a member of the Latin American Bishops' Conference (CELAM) , and from 1991 chairman of the Commission for Education.

In 1989 he was elected administrator of the Archdiocese of Asunción "ad interim", shortly thereafter in 1990 he was appointed prelate of the then Alto Paraná prelature . In 1992, John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Aufinium and appointed him military bishop for Paraguay - during the military dictatorship of Andrés Rodríguez . During the annual general assembly of the CEP in 1994 he was elected General Secretary of the CEP. In November of the same year, Pope John Paul II also appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Caacupé. In 2000 he was also appointed Bishop and Apostolic Administrator of Alto Paraná.

In 2002 he was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Asunción. Since 2002 he has been Vice President of the Paraguayan Bishops' Conference CEP.

Eustaquio Pastor Cuquejo Verga was traded as a future cardinal for a time . His suffragan bishop Rogelio Ricardo Livieres Plano publicly described him as homosexual in 2014; as a result, a visit to Livieres Planos diocese was ordered and Livieres Planos was removed from office by Pope Francis.
