With over 55,000 inhabitants, San Estanislao is the largest city in the Paraguayan department of San Pedro . It is also known under the name of Santaní .
San Estanislao was founded on November 28, 1750 by the Jesuit Sebastián de Yegros as one of the last Jesuit missions and is named after Saint Stanislaus Kostka . There are some cold springs nearby, called Guaraní Ykuá (cold water), which are said to have magical properties.
In 1869, during the Triple Alliance War , the city was temporarily the capital of Paraguay. In the 1890s it became an important trading center for the Anglo-Argentine La Industrial Paraguaya , which had acquired large lands nearby for mate cultivation.
