The Archdiocese of Asunción ( Latin : Archidioecesis Sanctissimae Assumptionis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Asunción , the capital of Paraguay.
The Archdiocese was founded on July 1, 1547 as the Diocese of Paraguay , a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Lima , by Pope Paul III. founded; the first bishop was the Spanish Franciscan Juan de los Barrios, OFM. By Pope Pius XI. it was raised to an archbishopric on May 1, 1929; the first archbishop was the Paraguayan Sinforiano Bogarín .
The current boundaries of the archdiocese are congruent with those of the administration and the district of the capital of the Republic of Paraguay.
