history

The Diocese of Encarnación was on January 21, 1957 by Pope Pius XII. from the cession of territory by the diocese of Concepción (Paraguay) and the diocese of Villarrica as the territorial prelature Encarnación y Alto Paraná . The territorial prelature was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Asunción as a suffragan . On March 25, 1968, the territorial prelature Encarnación y Alto Paraná was divided into the territorial prelatures Encarnación and Alto Paraná .

The territorial prelature Encarnación was raised on April 19, 1990 to the diocese.
