Territorial Prelature
A territorial or area prelature ( Latin praelatura territorialis , before the CIC 1983 also praelatura nullius dioeceseos ) is a particular church of the Roman Catholic Church that is equal to the diocese and has a territorially circumscribed scope according to can. 368 CIC .
They are mainly found in South America and Italy , but can also be found in Scandinavia and Asia. They are headed by a titular bishop who, however, exercises the full jurisdiction of a diocesan bishop in the area . In France, the village of Pontigny was elevated to a territorial prelature in order to incardinate the priests of the Mission de France in it .
