The territorial prelature Cafayate was on September 8, 1969 by Pope Paul VI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Praeclarisima exempla from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Salta and the Diocese of Catamarca . The territorial prelature was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Salta as a suffragan .
