The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salta ( lat. : Archidioecesis Saltensis , span. : Arquidiócesis de Salta ) is an in Argentina situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Salta .
history
The diocese of Salta was established on March 28, 1806 by Pope Pius VII with the papal bull Regalium Principum from cession of territory of the diocese of Córdoba and subordinated to the archdiocese of La Plata o Charcas as a suffragan . On March 5, 1865, the Diocese of Salta was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires as a suffragan. The Diocese of Salta gave up on February 15, 1987 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Tucumán . On April 20, 1934, there was another assignment of territory to establish the Diocese of Jujuy .
On April 20, 1934, the Diocese of Salta was by Pope Pius XI. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Salta gave up on April 10, 1961 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Orán . Another assignment of territory took place on September 8, 1969 to establish the territorial prelature of Cafayate .
Archbishop Roberto José Tavella SDB was the founder of the Catholic University of Salta .
