The Cathedral of Salta (Spanish: Catedral Santuario Nuestro Señor y la Virgen del Milagro ) is a Roman Catholic church in Salta , Argentina from the second half of the nineteenth century. The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Salta lies in the center of town and is an ornate building protected as a National Historic Monument is registered and the title of minor basilica bears.

history

The previous building was destroyed in the earthquake of 1856. Work on the new building began in 1858 under Bishop José Eusebio Colombres. The plans were designed by the architect Philip Bertres . After twenty years of construction, the new cathedral was inaugurated and opened. By 1882 the missing facade as well as the towers and bells were added with the help of Italian, Brazilian and Bolivian artists.

description

The building forms an ensemble with the Archbishop's Palace. The neo-baroque style is reminiscent of an Italian architectural ensemble. The rectangular, three-aisled floor plan includes a deep choir and a semicircular apse . The main altar is by Fray Luis Gorgi .

The crossing is crowned by a dome over a drum that carries a lantern . Daylight shines through the windows of the two side corridors, which are decorated with stained glass . The entrance area is crowned by a rich baroque decoration. The central motif is a majestic quatrefoil .

The cathedral also serves as a pantheon for the regional heroes of the South American War of Independence against the royalists loyal to Spain, which took place in the early nineteenth century. These include the remains of Martín Miguel de Güemes , Rudecindo Alvarado and Juan Antonio Álvarez de Arenales.

Behind the cathedral is the Cathedral Museum on Belgrano Street. It shows various paintings by Italian painters, from Spain, Upper Peru and Salta of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In addition, there are works by mestizos made of various materials as well as jewelry, furniture and clothing.
