The in Algeria located Diocese of Oran ( Latin Dioecesis Oranensis , French Diocèse d'Oran ) was established on 25 July 1866 and is based in Oran El Maqqari. It belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Algiers .

history

The 77,353 km² diocese had 355,000 believers in 1950, 10,000 in 1980 and 7,000 in 1990. Today there are only 400 Catholics left , with a population of 7,500,000 in this region. With 7 diocesan priests (in 1950 there were 103), 12 religious priests and 51 religious sisters (1950 there were 390), in 7 parishes (1950 there were 102), the number of religious members has decreased significantly for decades. The departure of the French occupation led to a profound restructuring in the diocese , as in the other dioceses in Algeria. It is not without interest that most of the bishops were always diocesan priests.

On August 1, 1996, the then Bishop of Oran Pierre Claverie was murdered at the entrance to his episcopal church. The attack caused concern, sadness and indignation around the world. Claverie is considered one of the great pioneers of the Christian-Islamic dialogue . The bishop had previously attended a memorial event for the seven monks in May 1996 with the then French Foreign Minister Hervé de Charette in the Trappist monastery of Tibhirine , who were first abducted and then brutally beheaded in May 1996 under circumstances that have not yet been clarified . The Roman Catholic Church in Algeria has initiated a process of beatification for the seven monks of Tibhirine and for twelve other religious who were murdered in the Algerian civil war .

To date, that's Monastery Tibhirine orphaned. A group of friends takes care of the house and grounds. The Trappist General Chapter decided in 1996 to maintain a community in Algeria. In response to a survey, eleven volunteers volunteered, six of whom were to be sent to Tibhirine. In the Holy Year 2000 celebrated Trappist from the convents in Fez and Algiers, the KAR and Easter in Tibhirne. During this period, violent attacks increased in the Medea area . A continuation of the monastic life on site seems too risky at the moment.

Parishes
