Iso Baumer

Iso Baumer (born April 4, 1929 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss scholar of religion and was a lecturer at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) .

Life

Iso Josef Bernhard Baumer grew up in the St. Gallen-Heiligkreuz district . There the sculptor and youth leader Albert Oesch (1907-1936) founded the Catholic boys' youth organization Tarzisiusbund , of which Baumer became a member from 1937. As a teenager from 1944 to 1948, Baumer wrote a comprehensive biography of Oesch, which, however, was only accessible to a limited group. During this time Baumer graduated from the literary high school of the St. Gallen Cantonal School . He then studied linguistics and literature in Bern , Freiburg, Paris ( Sorbonne ) and Rome and was awarded a doctorate in 1956. phil. PhD . In 1959 he married Verena Müller, a daughter of the legal historian Emil Franz Josef Müller-Büchi . Baumer was a high school teacher in Bern and lecturer in Eastern Church Studies on the one hand at the University of Freiburg (1988–1999) as the successor to the dogmatics professor and later Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and on the other hand at the theological school of Einsiedeln Abbey (2002–2008). From 1994 to 2000 he was Secretary General of Catholica Unio Internationalis .

He is the founder of the Baumer Fund at the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg.

Baumer dealt with theology at an early age and wrote many publications on western and eastern church history (religious folklore , eastern church studies). He is known for his network, his knowledge of the Christian churches and his balanced analyzes.
