Heiligkreuz (official name in the statistics of the city of St. Gallen: Langgass-Heiligkreuz ) is a district in the east of St. Gallen . The district is bordered in the south by the SBB and SOB railway lines St. Gallen – Rorschach and St. Gallen – Romanshorn , in the east by Galgentobel , in the north-east by the municipality of Wittenbach , in the north-west by the Rotmonten district and in the south-west by the OLMA site . The quarter is located a little lower than the city center of St. Gallen and is known as the “valley quarter”. Until it closed in spring 2008, the Espenmoos football stadium with the FC St. Gallen city club was a magnet for the entire region.

The quarter takes its name from a wayside cross, which was probably built in the 16th century on the site of today's pilgrimage church Heiligkreuz .

The connection to the public transport network is through the SBB train station St. Gallen St. Fiden , the bus lines 3, 4, 6, 9 and 11 of the transport company of the city of St. Gallen (VBSG) as well as the post bus lines to Arbon (80.200) and Wittenbach (80.203) guaranteed. Lines 3, 4 and 6 are to be served by 17 new battery trolleybuses from 2020, whereby the batteries are to be charged during the journey on the currently existing contact lines and newly constructed contact line infrastructure in order to cover part of the routes in pure battery operation.

The quarter has three primary school buildings, the Buchwald, Heimat and Gerhalde schools, as well as several kindergartens, play groups and gyms. The Buchwald double gym, built in 1955, was inaugurated on April 25, 2012 after extensive renovation. The nursing home built across from the Protestant church in 1961 was the first such facility in the city of St. Gallen. It will be replaced by a larger new building in 2018. The Protestant church was built in the years 1910–1913 on the site of the former prince-abbot's place of execution according to plans by Robert Curjel and Karl Moser and, like the entire district, belonged to the former municipality of Tablat. In the Bruggwaldpark on the border with the municipality of Wittenbach, a home for the blind was built in 1907 that was in operation until 2011 and has since been closed.

Numerous associations enliven the quarter through various events, such as the association "Jugend und Familie Heiligkreuz" which has a striking and popular center with the Casa Sant'Antonio.

Commercial and industrial operations on Lukasstrasse.

The Lukasmühleweg near Steinach and the new hiking trail along the railway lines through the Galgentobel to Mörschwil were ideas that were developed in the future workshop in the Heiligkreuz district at three events in November / December 2003 and implemented by the city administration.

There are several commercial industrial establishments on Lukasstrasse in the southeast of the quarter.

Around the St. Fiden train station , there are some of the last large building land reserves in the city of St. Gallen, particularly to the north in the Heiligkreuz district and south in St. Fiden. In December 2017 a concept for the development of the area was presented, whereby construction is not expected to start before 2022.
