The Steinach is a 13.5 km long river in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .
course
The Steinach rises east of the St. Georgen district of St. Gallen in the Steineggwald between Vögelinsegg and St. Georgen . It flows through St. Gallen and ends in Steinach in the Lake Constance .
The young river passes between St. Georgen and the old town of St. Gallen Mülenenschlucht . After being overturned in stages between 1867 and 1911, it flowed underground in the St. Gallen urban area until 1991 between the valley station of the Mühleggbahn and the Lukasmühleweg. At the eastern end of the city, between the St. Fiden train station and the Espenmoos , it reappeared and then flowed out of the city towards the northeast in the Galgentobel (also known as Steinachtobel). Because of the mixing of sewage and clean stream water and the resulting pollution of the river, an underground tunnel was built in 1991, which leads the water of the Steinach and the streams Wiesen- and Bavariabach unpolluted to the Espenmoos. Since then, the old Steinachdole has been exclusively a mixed water canal that leads to the St. Gallen-Hofen wastewater treatment plant.
Over the next ten kilometers, the Steinach loses around 250 meters in height to Lake Constance, mostly running deep into the ravine .
Others
According to legend, St. Gallus fell over a thorn bush at the foot of the Mulenenschlucht gorge below St. Georgen. He took this as a sign of God and founded a hermitage here. This has become the city of St. Gallen.
The village of Steinach on Lake Constance is named after this river.
