It is located in the south of Central Franconia in the west of the district. It is named after the Hahnenkamm ridge . The longest river in the region is the Rohrach , which feeds the Hahnenkammsee south of Heidenheim . The administrative community is 93.1 square kilometers in size, which corresponds to about ten percent of the area of ​​the district.

The municipality of Polsingen belonged to the administrative community until December 31, 1979 .
