The seat of the administrative community is Gunzenhausen , which does not itself belong to the administrative community . The administrative community is both the most populous and the largest administrative community in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district. 6600 people live in the administrative community (as of December 31, 2014), which corresponds to around seven percent of the population of the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district. The administrative community is located in the south of Central Franconia and covers an area of 114.53 square kilometers, which corresponds to about twelve percent of the area of the district.
The municipality of Muhr a.See originally belonged to the administrative community as the fifth member , which was dismissed with effect from January 1, 1998.
