history

The first reference to the Lords of Muhr comes from the year 888. For 893 the place name vicus mura is mentioned. The Castle Altenmuhr originated in the early 12th century - not received - Neuenmuhrer Castle about a century later. In 1525 the Reformation was enforced by Veit von Lentersheim . In 1632 almost all of Neuenmuhr was burned down during the Thirty Years War , only the castle and church remained. In 1752 the gatehouse was built in Altenmuhr. In 1799 the Muhr castles - immortalized by Schiller in 1781 in the robbers - came into the possession of the Prussian minister Karl August von Hardenberg . In 1810 Alten- and Neuenmuhr became Bavarian . The castles passed into the possession of Wilhelm von Le Suire in 1837 . In 1938 the Jewish community of Altenmuhr was forcibly dissolved under the rule of the National Socialists .

Muhr am See has only existed in its current form since January 1, 1976. As part of the Bavarian municipal reform , the two forerunners Altenmuhr and Neuenmuhr were merged into a single municipality. Since it was already clear at this point that the Altmühlsee would later (1986) arise as part of the Franconian Lake District, the new municipality was named "Muhr am See".

In the year the bypass of the federal highway 13 was completed.

  • Altenmuhr Castle
The original moated castle with its keep dates from the 12th century. It is considered to be one of the most interesting castles in the upper Altmühltal . Originally conceived as a square kennel with four round corner towers, its walls and moat were lost in the 19th century , so that now only the main building from the early 17th century and the keep can be seen. This has a height of 20 meters and a wall thickness of about 1.6 meters. The three-story west building with volute gable conceals rich stucco ceilings by Hans Kuhn from Nuremberg on the second floor . In the four-storey, almost tower-like east wing, a valuable grisaille wallpaper from around 1810/20 has been preserved in a room .
The castle was originally built by the von Muhr family and is now privately owned by the Le Suire family . It is only accessible on request.
  • Gatehouse
  • St. Johannis Church (Protestant)
The first major known reconstruction of St. John's Church took place in 1467. In 1798 a lightning strike caused severe damage; the tower was rebuilt in its current onion shape. An interior renovation with replacement of the old windows was carried out between 1908 and 1910; At the end of the 20th century, the church was renovated both outside and inside.
  • St. Jakobus Church (Protestant)
St. Jakobus attracts attention today mainly because of the stork's nest, which has been on the west gable since 1946. The church was built in 1622, but robbed soldiers of its bell ten years later when the rest of the village was burned down. Only through a donation from Gustav von Lentersheim could a bell be purchased again in 1726.
  • St. Walburgis Church (Catholic)
The simply designed Walburgis Church was not consecrated until 1958 .
  • Francis Chapel (ecumenical)
In October 2013, the chapel with a window was inaugurated by Johannes Schreiter on the private initiative of Mayor Roland Fitzner between Muhr and Wehlenberg .
  • Widow's residence in Julienberg
The widow's residence Julienberg dates from the 17th century.
The bird island has an information center and an ornithological educational trail.
  • Altmühlsee information center
The information center is located at the Muhrer Bürgerhof, where you can find out about technology, nature and culture around the Altmühlsee.
