The Wiesmet is one of the largest and most important wetlands in southern Germany with around 1100 hectares . It is located in an uninhabited area north of the Altmühlsee in southern Central Franconia . The Wiesmet is located on the territory of the places Merkendorf , Ornbau and Arberg in the district of Ansbach and the places Muhr am See and Gunzenhausen in the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen .

The Wiesmet lies at around 415 meters above  sea level between Muhr am See in the southeast and Ornbau in the northwest and is bordered in the south by Altmühlsee, in the east by Mönchswald , in the north by the towns of Hirschlach and Heglau and in the west by the Altmühlzuleiter . The old arm of the Altmühl and several rivers and streams flow through the wetland. Only a few dirt roads lead through the Wiesmet. The area is protected as a fauna and flora habitat and an EU bird sanctuary and is designated as a floodplain in the event of a hundred-year design flood .

The area is regularly flooded by the Altmühl , which has its lowest gradient here. Around 900 hectares of the Wiesmet were lost through the establishment of the Franconian Lake District, which is why the Free State of Bavaria has bought and renatured around 170 hectares of land. Many farmers have contractually agreed to accept restrictions on agricultural use in order to preserve the Wiesmet as a living space. Many different species of birds breed in the Wiesmet. It is the only wetland in which all of Bavaria's native meadow breeders live, including lapwing , curlew and black godwit .
