The Mönchswald is a wooded area north of Altenmuhr in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Central Franconia . A small northern part is located in the Ansbach district . The Mönchswald was a community-free area until the municipal reform in Bavaria . Together with the neighboring Haundorfer Forest , the forest area forms one of the largest contiguous forests in Bavaria and the Mönchswald region hiking area .

The Mönchswald is located in the northwest of the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in the north of the Franconian Lake District . The forest area lies in the north of the municipality of Muhr am See and to a small extent in the area of the towns of Merkendorf and Wolframs-Eschenbach . The Mönchswald lies between Ornbau in the west and Haundorf in the east. The Nesselbach separates it from the Haundorfer Wald . The Wiesmet borders in the west . The federal highway 13 crosses the forest. The village of Forsthaus is located on the southern edge of the forest .

The area got its name from the monks of Heilsbronn Monastery , who reclaimed the forest that Bishop Otto von Eichstätt had given them in 1191 .

Pine and spruce dominate the tree population , in some places there are also deciduous trees . Due to its location in the Franconian Lake District, the forest is a popular hiking area. It is well developed for tourism and criss-crossed by cycling and hiking trails.
