Altenmuhr Castle

Altenmuhr is a district of the unitary community Muhr am See in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Middle Franconia . Altenmuhr was an independent municipality until January 1, 1976.

location

The formerly structurally independent place has now grown together with Neuenmuhr and Stadeln zu Muhr am See. Altenmuhr is the western part. The northeastern edge is roughly formed by the Treuchtlingen – Würzburg railway line , and in the east the St. Jakobus Church on the edge of Neuenmuhr.

history

Altenmuhr is one of the oldest settlements in the Altmühltal and was first mentioned in a document in 888. As early as the 15th century, the place was surrounded by a moat and palisades to protect it from enemies. This protective ring wall is said to have been leveled only in the 19th century.

The gatehouse was mentioned in 1551 . It was part of the fortifications at that time. Other buildings in Altenmuhr are the Evangelical Lutheran St. John's Church from the 13th century, Altenmuhr Castle from the 12th century and the Roman Catholic St. Walburgis Church .

In an arch of the Altmühl was the now abandoned Mittelmuhr Castle , which had been inhabited by the von Muhr gentlemen since 600 . The newer Altenmuhr Castle was also inhabited by the von Muhr gentlemen.

The former municipality of Altenmuhr included the town of Stadeln, the hamlet of Wehlenberg , the desert forest house and the Nesselmühle, which was sold in 1977 . In the course of the municipal reform in 1976, all were incorporated into the municipality of Muhr am See.
