Gatehouse (Muhr)

Gatehouse of Muhr am See

The gatehouse in Altenmuhr is the landmark of the municipality of Muhr am See in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Central Franconia . It was part of the local fortification of Altenmuhr with a moat and wall . The address is Rosenau 6. The building is registered under monument number D-5-77-114-22 as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument list.

The previous building of the gatehouse was built in 1551. The current building was built in 1752. The gatehouse was inhabited by the night watchman and ox herder of the place. The building remained inhabited until the 1960s. In 1982 it was raised to allow passage with larger vehicles . The mansard roof of the half-timbered building is crowned by a small bell tower .
