The Haundorfer Wald is a contiguous forest area not far from the eponymous place Haundorf in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . Until the municipal reform in Bavaria, the forest was a municipality-free area . Together with the Mönchswald and the Graefensteinberg Forest , it forms one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Bavaria and the hiking area Mönchswald region . Parts of the forest area are in the Spalter hill country .

It is located in the northwest of the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in the Franconian Lake District and in the Mönchswald region . The border to the district of Ansbach is partly nestled around the forest, partly it also runs through the forest. The forest surrounds Haundorf on three sides, only to the south of the village are open meadows and fields. In the middle of the forest are Oberhöhberg , Unterhöhberg , Leidingendorf , Seitersdorf , Dematshof , Lindenbühl and Stixenhof . In addition to some land paths and municipal roads, the district roads WUG 23 and WUG 22 as well as the federal road 466 run through the forest area . Within the forest area there are several springs, including the so-called Goldbrünnlein west of Neudorf, streams and ponds, such as the Nesselbach, for example . The terrain is mountainous, with the Mönchsberg , Höhberg and Büchelberg in the forest .

In the south of the forest there is a fauna and flora habitat . In the forest was the Georgenthal hunting lodge , a hunting lodge of Margrave Georg Friedrich II the Younger , which was now sold . The Haundorfer Weiher lies in the southern edge .
