history
Until the church is planted
Traces of Celtic , Roman and Germanic old settlements have been found in the Arberg district . Two well-preserved Celtic entrenchments ( Viereckschanzen ) have been found in the district of Großlellenfeld . In 1892/93 Wilhelm Kohl examined the ORL route 14 of the Raetian Limes, popularly known as the “Devil's Wall”, from the Württemberg border to Lellenfeld, as "route commissioner" on behalf of the Reichs-Limeskommission . Among other things, he had the remains of the watchtower Wp 14/41 uncovered. The route commissioner Heinrich Eidam succeeded in 1893 in the forest near Kleinlellenfeld, the various structural features of the Limes in their construction sequence.
The place was first mentioned in 1229 as "Arberch". The place name is derived from an identical field name, the defining word of which is the Middle High German word "Ar" (= eagle). At that time it was the seat of the Eichstätter inheritance taverns ( see also: Arberg Castle ). Between 1319 and 1512, the Eichstätt monastery acquired all of the properties in Arberg and set up a maintenance and caste office there in 1602. From 1500 Arberg belonged to the Franconian Empire . In 1454 the place was first called market.
During the witch hunt in the Hochstift Eichstätt at least four women from Arberg were arrested for witchcraft. Two of them were released again (Anna Schmelz 1590, Anna Spindlerin before 1620) while Apollonia Hartliebin in 1616 and Anna Gölderin from Großlellenfeld were executed on September 24, 1627.
Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place, like large parts of Franconia, has belonged to Bavaria (see also History of Franconia ). With the community edict (early 19th century) the tax district Arberg was formed, to which the places Georgenhaag , Goldbühl , Gothendorf , Kemmathen , Mörsach , Oberschönau , Unterschönau and Waffenmühle belonged. A little later, the rural community of Arberg was formed with Ober- and Unterschönau . It was subject to the Herrieden district court in terms of administration and jurisdiction . In 1961 the municipality had an area of 7.770 km².
Incorporations
Ober- and Unterschönau belonged to the historic Arberg market . As part of the regional reform in Bavaria on January 1, 1971, the following previously independent municipalities and their suburbs were incorporated into Arberg: Mörsach (with Georgenhaag and Gothendorf ), Kemmathen (with Goldbühl ), and the hamlet of Waffenmühle , which previously became an independent municipality of Wiesethbruck (today part of the municipality of Markt Bechhofen an der Heide ) belonged. Lellenfeld (with Eybburg , Großlellenfeld and Kleinlellenfeld ) was incorporated into Arberg on May 1, 1978.
Population development
In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population increased by 240 inhabitants or 11.9% from 2024 to 2264.

badges and flags
Arberg has had its own coat of arms since the 15th century.
Blazon : "In red on a green three-mountain standing a left-turned, ready-to-fly golden eagle , on which an upright silver bishop's staff is deposited."
Yellow-green-white municipal flag |
|
Justification for the coat of arms: The eagle and the three mountain stand for the place name. The crosier and the colors silver and red are taken from the coat of arms of the Hochstift Eichstätt , to which the place belonged from the 16th century. The oldest surviving seal from the early 15th century shows only an eagle. |
Culture and sights
Architectural monuments
- Arberg is rich in architectural monuments. The fortifications were built around 1300 and reinforced in the 14th and 15th centuries. The historic gate tower on the market square with a coat of arms from 1531 belongs to it. In 1735 it was converted by Gabriel de Gabrieli into a two-storey gatehouse with a mansard roof . The building stock of the St. Blasius Church has a core from the 13th century with late Gothic changes. The new building by Giovanni Battista Camessina from 1709/10 was expanded by Friedrich Ferdinand Haindl in 1936/37 . The three-aisled church received a new white ceiling in 1792 by master mason Lorenz Antdrit (Arberg) and Anton Leitner under the direction of Salles . It is decorated with valuable frescoes, wooden figures and grave monuments. There is also the cemetery church Zum Heiligen Kreuz (1586) and several chapels.
