Volpert (von) Motzel (born December 12, 1604 in Arberg (today Bavaria ), † January 27, 1662 in Salzburg ) was Salzburg court chancellor .

Life

Volpert was the son of George Motzel, fürstbischöflich eichstättischer Kastner Arberg. From 1619 he studied mathematics and physics at the University of Ingolstadt , from 1627 in Bourges (France) and Italy, and received his doctorate with Doctor iuris utriusque . He traveled to France, Italy and the Netherlands and spoke the languages ​​of these countries.

From 1629 to 1636 he served the Augsburg Abbey for five years, a. a. 1629 to 1631 as professor of civil law at the University of Dillingen. In 1637/38 he was Tyrolean regimental councilor and chamber procurator. From 1638 to 1643 he held high offices in the prince-bishopric of Eichstätt .

At the end of 1643 he was appointed court counselor and vice chancellor by Salzburg Archbishop Paris Count von Lodron and also received care and district court Neuhaus.

Motzel acted in 1646 and 1647 as the Salzburg ambassador to the peace negotiations in Münster and Osnabrück at the end of the Thirty Years War. From 1652 to 1654 he was one of the Salzburg ambassadors at the Regensburg Reichstag .

In 1649 he became court chancellor, secret councilor and feudal provost. In 1654, Motzel received the Salzburg Landmannschaft. 1655 he was by Emperor Ferdinand III. raised to the imperial nobility.

Volpert married Sara Burgklehner (* 1617 Innsbruck, † 1666 Salzburg) in Innsbruck on April 28, 1637, daughter of Michael Burgklehner von Thierburg and Vollandsegg and Sara von Reichart. The marriage had nine children, six of whom reached adulthood.

His and his wife's grave is in the collegiate church of St. Peter .
