history

The place is first mentioned in 1241 as "Binoltsbach". The place was originally part of the Nordenberg dominion (today the castle ruins), which separated the Windelsbach parish from the original parish in Gattenhofen in 1241. The current form "Windelspach" has only been used since 1504. The place name is derived from the personal name Binolt with the addition -bach.

In the 16-point report of the Brandenburg-Ansbach Oberamt Colmberg from 1608, 28 teams were recorded for Windelsbach: 26 properties were subordinate to the Colmberg caste office and 2 properties to the imperial city of Rothenburg . The High Court exercised the Vogtamt Colmberg . In the 16-point report of the Colmberg Oberamt from 1681, two teams were added for Windelsbach, both of which had the Colmberg caste office as landlord .

Towards the end of the 18th century there were 38 properties in Windelsbach with the Gugelmühle. The High Court and the village and community rule exercised the Vogtamt Colmberg. The landlords were the Kastenamt Colmberg (36 properties: 2 courtyards, 1 courtyard with tavern , 6 half- courtyards, 12 Köblergüter , 1 Köblergut with blacksmithing, 2 Söldengütlein , 2 mills, 1 tavern, 8 empty houses , 1 empty house with baking rights) and the imperial city of Rothenburg ( 1 Köblergut, taxes to the church in Windelsbach; 1 Söldengut, taxes to the parish of Windelsbach). In addition to the property, there were stately buildings (forester's house in the former, still existing hunting lodge of the Ansbach margraves, built by the builder Berwart in the 16th century), ecclesiastical buildings (church, rectory) and communal buildings (schoolhouse, shepherd's house, crushing house ).

In 1792 Prussia acquired the Principality of Ansbach, and thus Windelsbach as well. From 1797 to 1808 the place was subordinate to the Justice Office Leutershausen and Chamber Office Colmberg .

With the Rhine Confederation Act of 1806, the place became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria . As part of the municipal edict, the Windelsbach tax district was formed in 1808 , to which Cadolzhofen and the Gugelmühle belonged. The rural community of Windelsbach was founded in 1810 and was congruent with the tax district. It was subject to the Leutershausen Regional Court in administration and jurisdiction and to the Colmberg Rent Office for financial administration . With the second community edict (1818) the division into

  • Rural community Cadolzhofen;
  • Windelsbach rural community with Gugelmühle.

From 1862 to 1879 Windelsbach was administered by the district office of Rothenburg ob der Tauber , from 1880 by the district office of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (renamed the district of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 1938 ). In 1862 jurisdiction was transferred to the Rothenburg Regional Court (since 1880 Rothenburg ob der Tauber Local Court ). The financial management was taken over in 1880 by the Rentamt Rothenburg ob der Tauber (1920–1973: Finanzamt Rothenburg ob der Tauber ).

In 1961 the municipality had an area of 5.945 km².
