  1. Adelshofen , 931 inhabitants, 27.18 km²
  2. Gebsattel , 1719 inhabitants, 19.12 km²
  3. Geslau , 1322 inhabitants, 41.97 km²
  4. Insingen , 1166 inhabitants, 21.32 km²
  5. Neusitz , 2104 inhabitants, 13.78 km²
  6. Ohrbach , 625 inhabitants, 22.73 km²
  7. Steinsfeld , 1225 inhabitants, 31.8 km²
  8. Windelsbach , 1051 inhabitants, 38.5 km²

The administrative community has its seat in Rothenburg ob der Tauber .

The area of the administrative community Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the largest administrative communities in Bavaria. Geographically, it essentially corresponds to the northern half of the former district of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which was dissolved in 1972 . The area is delimited in the west by the state border with Baden-Württemberg and the Taubertal . In the north is the so-called "Landwehr", an area that is historically very closely linked to the formerly free imperial city of Rothenburg. The eastern part is crossed by the Frankenhöhe with the nature park of the same name.

The administrative community Rothenburg ob der Tauber was formed in the course of the municipal territorial reform with effect from May 1, 1978. Eight member communities with a total of 78 districts belong to it. With the formation of larger, independent municipalities, the state-wide regional reform in 1972/78 essentially aimed at strengthening the administrative power and financial performance of the municipalities while at the same time shifting administrative tasks to the new institution “ administrative community ”. Naturally, a number of problems of an organizational nature had to be overcome, because the current member communities with an average of 1,271 inhabitants were formed from 31 previously independent communities with an average of 280 inhabitants. Burghausen (65 inh.) And Poppenbach (72 inh.) Were among the smallest communities in Bavaria at that time.

The annual budget of € 981,657 (financial year 2006) is financed, among other things, with a contribution rate of € 66.50 per inhabitant. The total budget of the member communities and elementary school associations is around € 20 million.

The member communities are predominantly structured agriculturally. In addition to medium-sized craft and commercial enterprises, there are only a few industrial companies, which is why the tax power of the municipalities is relatively low. The average real tax rates for property tax are A 415 percent, property tax B 410 percent, and trade tax 314 percent (as of January 1, 2006). Due to the large number of districts, the municipalities have had to raise relatively high expenditures for infrastructure facilities in recent years , for example for the municipality's average of 30.50 kilometers of municipal roads (as of January 1, 2006). Tourism has developed quite considerably over the past few years, especially in the community of Geslau with the “Adventure farms” program, in the community of Windelsbach with the “Holidays on the farm” program and in the Taubertal. The part of the municipality Tauberzell , which belongs to Adelshofen, is the only wine-growing place in the district of Ansbach besides Rothenburg .
