From 1958 to 1965 he worked for the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation and compiled inventories of art monuments in the administrative district of Swabia . In 1974, Minister of Culture Hans Maier proposed him to the cabinet as general curator for the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation. The cabinet accepted the proposal. But the then CSU chairman Franz Josef Strauss then rejected him, which sparked a heated debate about the situation in the Bavarian state parliament. Opinions were made by the Minister of Education and the Prime Minister. The plenary talked about whether there was an imperative mandate . Petzet headed the office until 1999.
In 1988 Petzet became President of the German National Committee of the International Council for the Preservation of Monuments (ICOMOS). He was elected President of the ICOMOS International Committee in 1999. In 2008 he resigned the office of international president and in 2012 that of national president. Since 2008 he has been honorary president of the international ICOMOS, since 2012 honorary president of the national ICOMOS.
Petzet was honorary professor at the University of Bamberg and taught at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Technical University in Munich.
Michael Petzet was the author of numerous books and publications on French architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries, on art and art monuments in Bavaria (in particular on the castles of King Ludwig II and the architecture of historicism ), as well as on general questions of monument protection and Monument preservation. As early as 1968 he brought about a rehabilitation of the long unrecognized creations of the king as the climax of an international historicism with the Munich exhibition King Ludwig II. And Art, which received worldwide attention . He was also the editor of several periodicals on monument preservation.
