Jacques-Germain Soufflot (born July 22, 1713 in Irancy near Auxerre , † August 29, 1780 in Paris ; sometimes written Soufflet ) was a French architect .

Life

Soufflot studied in Rome, then built the hospital in Lyon and went to Italy for the second time in 1750 . On his return he began his main work, the church of Ste-Geneviève de Paris (now Panthéon ), whose dome is one of the most famous in the world. He also built the sacristy and treasury of Notre Dame in Paris.

Soufflot died five weeks after his 67th birthday on August 29, 1780 in Paris, where he found his final resting place. His body was transferred to the Panthéon in 1829 .

Soufflot's lecture on Gothic architecture from 1741 heralded the rehabilitation of medieval architecture in France and a little later in Germany as well.

  • 1741–1748: Facade of the “Hôtel-Dieu” in Lyon
  • 1747–1750: Reconstruction of the “Temple du Change” or “Loge des Changes” in Lyon
  • 1754–1756: Theater des Quartier Saint-Clair in Lyon
  • 1757–1790: Church of Sainte-Geneviève (today: Panthéon (Paris) ), Paris. Completed only after Soufflot's death.
  • 1764: Remodeling of the Menars castle ( Loir-et-Cher department ) for Abel-François Poisson de Vandières , Marquis de Marigny, brother of Madame de Pompadour.
  • 1765: Remodeling of the Palais Bourbon in Paris
  • 1768–1771: “Hôtel Marigny”, Paris, for the Marquis de Marigny. Destroyed.
  • 1766–1775: part of the “Hôtel de la Marine”, Paris, Place de la Concorde
  • 1771–1783: École de Droit (today: Faculty of Law), Paris. According to Soufflot's plans, completed only after his death. The neighboring mayor's office in the 12th district ( 5th arrondissement since 1860) was later built according to the same plans . The street that separates the two buildings is called Soufflots.
  • 1775: Fontaine de la Croix-du-Tahoir, Paris (in collaboration with Louis-Simon Boizot)
  • 1777: Nymphaeum for the “La Faisanderie” palace in Chatou
