Jean-Baptiste Rondelet
Jean-Baptiste Rondelet (born June 4, 1743 in Lyon , † September 26, 1829 in Paris ) was a French architect and architectural theorist.
Life
Rondelet was a student of Jacques-Germain Soufflot and Jacques-François Blondel .
Rondelet helped build the Église de Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, now known as the Panthéon . First he worked under Jacques-Germain Soufflot and after his death in 1780 he continued the construction work until it was completed in 1790. In particular, he was responsible for the final construction of the drum dome as well as subsequent repair work on the Pantheon between 1806 and 1812. Together with Emiland-Marie Gauthey , he examined the structural damage that had occurred using scientific and technical methods.
Rondelet worked as a teacher at the Paris Polytechnic , where he introduced the subject of civil engineering. From 1799 he also taught at the Académie des Beaux-Arts . His special merits are in the field of construction theory. He wrote mathematical theorems for the static calculations of walls and building structures. He also made early experiments on the material properties of building materials, such as their compressive strength .
He was in 1814 by Louis XVIII. appointed a member of the Legion of Honor and became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1816. He was a corresponding member of the Académie d'Arras .
