Irancy is a commune in the French department of Yonne ( Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region ) near the city of Auxerre . The community has 279 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), has a floor area of 11.98 km² and is located at an altitude of 171 meters above sea level.
The Y at the end of the place name suggests a Celtic-Roman origin.
Population development
Irancy is one of the small communities in the Yonne department. After the number of inhabitants increased in the first half of the 20th century, the number of inhabitants has continued to shrink since the mid-1970s.

Attractions
The parish church of Saint-Germain with Romanesque and classical elements. The acoustics for the performance of chamber music works are considered excellent.
Economy and Infrastructure
Irancy is a predominantly agricultural ( viticulture and fruit growing ) village. Today there are a few local small businesses. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
While the cultivation of cherries is strongly declining, 251 hectares of the municipal area are planted with vines. The wine is marketed under the communal designation of origin Irancy , which has been recognized since November 6, 1998. The rare César grape variety is still grown here. The winemakers also have the right to use the regional designations of origin Bourgogne , Bourgogne Aligoté , Bourgogne Passetoutgrain , Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire and Crémant de Bourgogne .
Personalities
- Birthplace of Jacques-Germain Soufflot , architect . He studied in Rome, then built the hospital in Lyon and in 1750 went to Italy for the second time . On his return he began his main work, the Church of St. Geneviève in Paris (now Panthéon ), whose dome is one of the most famous in the world. He also built the sacristy and treasury of Notre Dame in Paris.
