Migennes is a French commune with 7240 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (Bourgogne) region in the Yonne department .
geography
The city lies on the Armançon River , which flows into the Yonne here . Migennes is about 23 kilometers from the capital of the department, Auxerre .
history
Migennes comes from Gallo-Roman times and was called Mitigana in the Roman Empire. In the 19th century, excavations unearthed mosaics and other cultural objects. The town owes its rise from a small community on the one hand to the construction of the Canal de Bourgogne , which is here connected to the Yonne , and on the other hand to the creation of the Laroche railway junction. This is located exactly between Paris and Dijon on the Paris – Marseille and Migennes – Cosne railway lines and therefore enabled a strategically advantageous provision of steam locomotives during the First World War . Today the Laroche-Migennes station has lost its importance because the long-distance trains have been given a different route with the construction of the LGV Sud-Est from Paris to the east.
