The Paris – Marseille railway line is a railway line that connects the capital Paris with Marseille via Dijon and Lyon . It is also known as Ligne PLM . The route was built between 1847 and 1855 and operated by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée . From 1938 the connection became the property of the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF). It passes through the regions of Île-de-France , Bourgogne-Franche-Comté , Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur .

There is a parallel new line along almost its entire length . Since 1997, the line, like the rest of the network, has been owned by the Réseau ferré de France (RFF) railway infrastructure company .

Route

The route leads from Gare de Lyon in a south-easterly direction along the Seine , later it goes upstream along the Yonne , the Armançon and the Brenne . It crosses the Mediterranean - Atlantic watershed at an altitude of 405 meters. The route has a gradient of 8 per mille between Les Laumes-Alésia and Dijon.

From Dijon the route follows the Saône , from Lyon it is on the left bank of the Rhone . From Arles , the route realigns itself in an easterly direction. Marseille is reached after driving through the tunnel de la Nerthe (4640 meters).

Between Givors -Canal and Grezan there is a parallel railway line Givors-Canal-Grezan on the right bank of the Rhone, this is mainly used for freight traffic .

history

As the star of Legrand intended, the route was aimed at Paris. It was initially planned to build a long tunnel under Mont Afrique , this was eventually discarded and the route was led with a shorter tunnel via Blaisy-Bas . The route was opened gradually. The first 196 kilometers from Paris to Tonnerre opened on August 12, 1849. The Dijon – Chalon-sur-Saône section opened on September 1st of the same year. On June 22, 1851, the Tonnerre – Dijon section was put into operation. The section from Chalon-sur-Saône to Lyon was opened three years later on July 10, 1854.

The company was carried out from 1857 to 1938 by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée . From 1938 it was integrated into the Société nationale des chemins de fer français , since then it has provided traffic.

The line has been electrified with 1.5 kV direct current since 1962  . The electrification work lasted from 1949 to 1962.

A first world speed record was set at Vougeot on February 20, 1954 , with a locomotive of the CC 7100 series reached 243 km / h .

The travel times from Paris to Marseille have been reduced again and again. In 1954 the Mistral needed 8 h 03 min, in 1962 it was only 7 h 10 min and in 1969 the travel time of the TEE Mistral was reduced to 6 h 40 min.

The greatest reduction in travel times was only achieved with the commissioning of the parallel Ligne à grande vitesse . In 1983, the LGV Sud-Est reduced the travel time from Paris to Marseille to 4 hours 42 minutes, in 1994 the LGV Rhône-Alpes reduced the journey time to just 4 hours 14 minutes, and on the LGV Méditerranée , which has existed since 2001, the fastest ones need Trains only 3 h 04 min (as of May 2020).

Incidents

  • On July 19, 1957, in the early hours of the morning, an express train from Nice to Paris derailed at Bollène station . He was directed to a sideline unscheduled . The corresponding switch connection should only have been driven at 30 km / h, but the train was still driving at almost 100 km / h. The leading steam locomotive overturned. Escaping steam scalded some passengers in the sleeping car behind . A total of 31 people died and 69 were injured.

Infrastructure

Moret-sur-Loing Viaduct

The route is double-tracked throughout. From Gare de Lyon to Melun there are six or four tracks. There are also four tracks south of Lyon to Chasse-sur-Rhône . From there there are two tracks that go to Marseille-Saint-Charles . The track is equipped with the Automatique Lumineux block. The maximum speed is 160 km / h on many sections.

The route has many engineering structures. It has two tunnels, each of which is more than 4 km long, namely the Tunnel de la Nerthe (4638 meters) and the Tunnel de Blaisy-Bas (4112 meters). There are also some larger bridges.

business

A Catalan Talgo from Barcelona at the station Valence - for the onward journey towards Geneva on the non-electrified section of railway line Valence-Moirans was to Chambery the BB-7200 - Electric locomotive , a diesel locomotive series BB 67000 preloaded (1993)

The TEE Mistral operated on the route until 1982 ; this connected Paris with Nice via Dijon, Lyon, Valence , Avignon , Marseille, Toulon , Saint-Raphaël , Cannes and Antibes . With the commissioning of the high-speed lines, long-distance passenger traffic on the route decreased significantly; it was gradually shifted to the LGV Sud-Est, the LGV Rhône-Alpes and the LGV Méditerranée. Between 1969 and 1994 reversed on the section Tarascon -Valence between Barcelona and Geneva circulating Catalan Talgo .

Regional trains of the TER Bourgogne , TER Rhône-Alpes and TER Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur as well as between Paris and Montereau of the Transilien Paris-Lyon run on the route today . The route is also used for freight traffic.
