The Dijon – Vallorbe line is a main cross-border line in France and Switzerland and serves as a connection between the Paris – Marseille line and the Simplon line . It is also the gateway from Paris to the latter.

history

The railway line was opened between Paris and Frasne in 1855. In 1862 the section between Pontarlier and Frasne was added, so that the gap in the cross-border railway line Frasne - Les Verrières could be closed.

Finally, in 1875, the Pontarlier – Vallorbe railway was opened with the Col de Jougne tunnel to connect to the Simplon line , which was opened between 1855 and 1870 . The trains from Paris to Lausanne had to complete a hairpin at Vallorbe station. After the opening of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906, the route was used by up to 40 trains a day for cross-border traffic between Paris and Lausanne (Milan).

In 1915, with the Tunnel du Mont d'Or, a second PLM line was put into operation between Frasne and Vallorbe, which had a lower gradient and also made it unnecessary to worry about your head in Vallorbe. This new line took up long-distance traffic, while the old line via Pontarlier was still used for local traffic. After severe damage in World War II (including by blowing up the Jougne Tunnel), the line was gradually shut down until 1969. Since 1993, a museum railway has been operating between Pontarlier and Les Hôpitaux-Neufs-Jougne under the name Coni'Fer .

Around 50 of the 145 kilometers are two-lane, the rest is single-lane.

The entire line was electrified between 1956 and 1958 with 1500 volts direct current (Dijon - Dole) or 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current (Dole - Vallorbe).

business

Since 1984, the route has been operated mainly by the TGV Lyria from the connections from Paris to Lausanne and Bern with stops in Dijon , Frasne, Pontarlier (only trains from / to Bern) and Vallorbe (only trains from / to Lausanne). There are also TER regional trains operated by SNCF . Since December 2011, LGV Rhin-Rhône traffic has also been rolling on the first few kilometers of the route. A TGV from Frankfurt to Marseille has also been operating here since March 2012 .
