Sainte-Colombe is a French municipality with 409 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Aerial view of the community

Sainte-Colombe is 830  m above sea level, about seven kilometers west-southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the southern edge of the wide high plateau of Arlier (Pontarlier-Frasne) near the canalized course of the Drugeon , at the northern foot of the Montagne du Laveron .

The area of the 10.49 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Arlier, which is on average at 820 m. It is partly covered by meadows and partly by moorland. The northern border runs along the Drugeon, a tributary of the Doubs that once meandered through the moorland and is now canalized. To the south, the community area extends over the broad, predominantly wooded ridge of the Montagne du Laveron, which from a geological and tectonic point of view forms an anticline of the Jura . Here, at 1024 m, the highest point of Sainte-Colombe is reached. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

Neighboring communes of Sainte-Colombe are Bannans and Chaffois in the north, Granges-Narboz in the east, La Planée in the south and La Rivière-Drugeon in the west.

With 409 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Sainte-Colombe is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (320 people were still counted in 1881), there has been significant population growth again since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Sainte-Colombe was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Pontarlier.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Pontarlier to La Rivière-Drugeon. Another road connection exists with La Planée. Sainte-Colombe has a station on the railway line that connects Frasne with Pontarlier and Neuchâtel .
