Évillers is a French municipality with 366 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Évillers is located at 739 m above sea level, about 15 kilometers northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the north-eastern edge of the wide high plateau of Levier, which belongs to the second plateau of the Jura, at the southern foot of the ridge of the Bois du Désert.
The area of the 13.02 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Levier, which averages 730 m, has a width of around 3 km and gradually narrows towards the northeast. It is mostly covered by meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. A dry valley runs south of the village , which topographically belongs to the catchment area of the Loue . The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the far south, the municipal area extends into the wooded area of the Bois du Pessoul . The northern boundary runs on the ridge of the Bois du Désert , on which the highest point of Évillers is reached at 933 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this elongated ridge forms an anticline of the Jura, which is oriented towards the west-south-west-east-north-east according to the direction of the low mountain range in this region.
Neighboring municipalities of Évillers are Amathay-Vésigneux , Longeville and Mouthier-Haute-Pierre in the north, Ouhans and Goux-les-Usiers in the east, Bians-les-Usiers and Sombacour in the south and Septfontaines in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Évillers belonged to the lordship of Montmahoux, which was under the sovereignty of the Lords of Chalon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2002, Évillers has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes Altitude 800, which comprises 11 localities .
Attractions
The village church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption originally dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries, but was largely rebuilt from 1745 to 1748. Various farmhouses in the traditional style of the Haut-Doubs from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the old town center.

With 366 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Évillers is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (422 people were counted in 1891), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Évillers was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a sawmill and a construction company. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Levier to Ouhans. There are other road connections with Goux-les-Usiers, Sombacour and Longeville.
