Watermill in Villers-Chief

Villers-Chief is a French municipality with 123 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Villers-Chief is located at 650 m above sea level, 15 kilometers south-southeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 31 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the high plateau of Villers, east of the Orsans basin, near the source of the Creuse.

The area of the 7.83 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plateau of Villers, which is an average of 650 m. It falls in the west to the Orsans basin, in the south to the valley of the Creuse and is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. The high plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the southeast, the terrain gradually rises up to the Bois de la Côte . At 773 m, the highest point of Villers-Chief is reached on the rocky ridge of Trois Croix. The source of the Creuse (source river des Audeux) is located south of the village in an erosion valley.

Neighboring communities of Villers-Chief are Vellerot-lès-Vercel and Villers-la-Combe in the north, Germéfontaine in the east, Domprel and Eysson in the south, and Épenouse and Bremondans in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Villers-Chief belonged to the Vercel estate. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Villers-Chief does not own a church; the village is parish after Villers-la-Combe. Today Villers-Chief is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.

With 123 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Villers-Chief is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (232 people were still counted in 1896), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Villers-Chief was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a sawmill and a mill on the Creuse. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Orsans to Pierrefontaine-les-Varans . Further road connections exist with Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp , Landresse and Villers-la-Combe.
